Controller, Specialty Gases

Praxair Distribution, Inc.

I come from a military background. I spent 12 years in the Navy serving as a Naval Flight Officer onboard P3 Orion Anti-Submarine Aircraft. I was deployed overseas many times to participate in Operation Enduring Freedom, or more commonly known as, the War on Terrorism.

So how did I end up joining Praxair? Well, my first step was attending the Business School at the University of Texas, San Antonio, where I gained my MBA in 2008. During a career fair, I learned about Praxair and the rest, as they say, is history.

I joined Praxair and used my MBA to gain an understanding of how the business operates. And this is a very well run organization. High performance and productivity are the hallmarks of success at Praxair, and coming from a military background, I can relate well to that.

This is an outstanding environment for people who are self-starters, have confidence in their own ability and want to reach their full potential. There are lots of opportunities to build your skills, learn and contribute, but at the end of the day, it’s up to you to drive your career. You have to make the first step. That may be daunting for some people, but if you embrace the culture and invest in the business, the career possibilities are endless.

One of the most valuable skills I learned in the military was to be flexible. A mission could change on a moment’s notice and I had to be ready to respond. That experience has equipped me for my career at Praxair. Every day is different and this is a fast-moving business. I’ve learned to respond positively to changing circumstances and take the view that every new assignment is an opportunity to work with new people and learn new things. Embracing that has enabled me to work with colleagues from all over the world.

There’s a very strong and distinctive culture at Praxair. It’s diverse and full of really smart people. It’s a friendly place to work and the people are very supportive. If I have an idea or want to try something new, I’m given the freedom to do so. The underlying trust that Praxair has in its people to do a good job is something that I greatly value.
